     Jean Louis Theodore Gentilz (1819-1906) was born in France and studied art at the Imperial School of Mathematics and Drawing in Paris, trained as a draftsman, painter and engineer, studying painting under Ramon Quesada Monvoisin.

     Gentilz moved to Texas in 1844 as a surveyor employee of Henri Castro, the founder of the colonist community of Castroville. He taught art at his home and at the St. Mary's School of Art from its founding in 1852. Two of his best students were Marie & Louise Fretelliere which many paintings of theirs are of similar subject matter.

     He is best known for his genre paintings of the multicultural San Antonio area and historically accurate renderings of the people, missions and buildings in Texas, as well as scenes in New Mexico and Mexico.
