     Jean Louis Theodore Gentilz (1819-1906)
was born in France and studied art at the Imperial School of Mathematics and Drawing in Paris, trained as a draftsman, painter and engineer, studying painting under Ramon Quesada Monvoisin.

He taught art at his home and at the St. Mary's School of Art from its founding in 1852. Two of his best students were Marie & Louise Fretelliere which many paintings of theirs are of similar subject matter.
