Thomas Allen, NA
Thomas Allen was in
San Antonio, Texas for only a short period of time
(1878-1879), however he painted some of his best works that are of
historic interest today including his best known work at Military
Plaza in San Antonio. San Antonio at that time was still a pioneer
town with the trains first arriving in 1878 the year Thomas arrived.
He recorded on canvas the pioneer ways of the city and country. His
subjects were Wagon Train trails, Cattlemen, Mexican peasants, the
missions and general lifestyle.
Allen was born in St. Louis and studied art there at Washington
University. He moved to Paris France 1872 and studied art at the
Royal Academy and continued his studies there until returning to the
U.S. in 1877. The following year is when he made his tour of the
West including San Antonio.
Allen was active for the rest of his life in the Boston,
Massachusetts area as an artist and businessman and dedicated time
to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He served as trustee and later
as President.
Thomas Allen exhibited at the National Academy of Design; Paris
Salon; World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago; The Art Institute of
Chicago and others.
He was a member of the National Academy of Design; Society of
American Artists; Copley Society of Boston and Boston Society of
