Native Texan Lewis Teel was born in Clarksville, Texas. His parents came
to Texas in 1826 from Tennessee and were among prominent pioneer families
of
East Texas. The Teel family moved to El Paso around 1889.
Being a close
observer and a lover of nature, he was impressed with the beauty
of the Western
Landscape.
He began his
art career after he was grown, visiting Joseph H. Sharp in Taos,
New Mexico.
Sharp advised him to stick to his own style of painting , to
continue with his
own self-expression, as he was a desert painter by nature
and would make
greater progress by following his own impressions.
Teel's works demonstrate skillful
draftsmanship, with a subtle and refined color,
while his compositions have a
distinct esthetic charm, conforming to an instinctive
sense of balance and
rhythm. Teel's favorite scenes were of the Desert and Canyons of West Texas, New Mexico
and Arizona.
