Meet Richard Plumly

I am always asked how I got started in the art business, so I will share my experience with you.

San Antonio has been my home for over a half of a century. It wasn't until 1988 that I discovered art. Never visiting a gallery or museum, I just dreamed up the possibility that there may be some good Texas artists and hopefully a market. I visited the local library and found a book on some of the earliest artists and spent the week-end reading the book at my mothers ranch near Camp Verde, Texas. I decided Julian Onderdonk was my favorite in the book. I then looked up and saw a painting on the wall and it was a Julian Onderdonk. I discovered we had several in the house including a 30x40 bluebonnet which was later sold in 1990.

My passion for art immediately flourished and with enhanced energy I researched every possible resource that I could find. Other than a couple of older books, there was not much research material, so it had to be put together piece by piece. One of the most interesting was finding the exhibit records for the Davis Wildflower Competition; Jose Arpa and his Students Exhibitions and many other early exhibits of the 1920's & 30's in San Antonio.

In the late 80's there were only a hand full of collectors for Early Texas Art and the prices for much of the lesser-known artists were minimal. Some of these lesser-known artists are well known now and sought after in today's market. Even artists such as Jose Arpa were narrowly known and conflicting information published. When Steinfeldt's book was published in the early 90's, it opened the door for wider interest that we have today, which other publications were to follow.

I continue on with the same vigor and sound principals, and the dedicated effort to please the collector and all of you who are selling art into the market place. I hope my effort enriches your life as the experience has certainly enriched mine.

We remain a traditional business with an internet presence. Always feel free to call or email with any questions you may have, and please visit when in San Antonio.
