Hugo David Pohl
Hugo David Pohl was
born in Detroit, Michigan. In 1888 at the age of eleven, Pohl began
his studies in art with Julius Melchers and with Joseph Gies at the
Detroit Museum of Art. He later studied in New York City and in
Paris, France with Jean Paul Laurens.
His early works were of the native American Indian. He found his
subjects in New Mexico and Arizona, traveling in his mobile studio before settling in San Antonio,
Texas in 1924.
Hugo Pohl had his studio in Brackenridge Park in the 1920's where he
painted some interesting subjects. He painted scenes of the Missions,
scenes in Brackenridge Park and other historical landmarks.
Pohl exhibited at the National Academy of Design; Annual Artists
Exposition, Fort Worth; Southern States Art League; Witte Museum;
Society of Independent Artists, New York and others.
