Crews
was
born in Mt. Vernon, Illinois and studied art
at
the Art Institute of Chicago and in New York, exhibiting in 1921 at the National Academy
of Design.
For a brief
period of time, Crews had a commercial art studio in Chicago employing 14
people
but sold out in 1916 and then moved to El Paso in 1925. He produced lithographs,
oil
paintings and murals of the desert; scenes of El Paso, Mexico and throughout the
southwest including western & ranch scenes and one mural of a stagecoach on the
Butterfield Trail.
Crews was a
traditional artist and a Magazine, Book and Movie Poster illustrator. In 1940 one of his
paintings was illustrated on the cover of the New Mexico Magazine.
Seth
Floyd Crews was an active exhibitor entering a painting each year (1927/28/29) in the
Prestigious Edgar B. Davis national competition in San Antonio, Texas.
