John Bob Payne
(1883-1962) San Antonio, Texas

    Payne was born in Collierville, Tenn and moved to San Antonio in 1891. He was inspired by his friends to paint, who were Julian Onderdonk, J. Frank Davis and Tex O'Reilly.

    Payne began his art career in the teens. He was listed in the 1913 San Antonio City Directory as an artist. His paintings included mostly Hill Country landscapes, missions, and scenes of ole San Antonio and Mexico.

    He was the President of the Coppini Academy in the 1950's and he frequently exhibited his works there with other artists such as Rolla Taylor, Clara Caffrey Pancoast, Margaret Tupper and others.
