Native
Texan Ella K. Mewhinney began her studies in St. Louis under Frank Phoenix & Kathryn
Cherry and was awarded a scholarship in still life. She then went to New York and studied
under George Bridgman at the Art Students League and then with Randall Davey and Robert
Reid at the Broadmoor Art Academy.
In the 1920's
she taught art along with Mollie Crowther in San Angelo, Texas. The school was known as
the Christoval Art Camp organized in 1922.
Mewhinney was
an active exhibitor, winning numerous awards and honorable mentions, including a prize for
landscape in the important Davis Exhibits in San Antonio in the late 20's and honorable
mention at the Dallas Women's Forum Exhibit for still life.
