Carl
Thomas Hoppe
(1897-1981) San Antonio, Texas
Carl Hoppe was a native Texan born in San Antonio and grew up amoung some of the leading
artists in the state, including Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood and Jose Arpa.
Hoppe attended field trips with Julian Onderdonk.
Hoppe began
painting as a youth and later studying under Jose Arpa with Clara Caffrey
Pancoast, John Enser, Gilbert Neumann and others, exhibiting numerous
paintings in the mid to late 20's. Many of the exhibits were held at the Witte
Museum by exclusively Jose Arpa & His Students, consisting of a large class
of approximately 42 students. His works have also been exhibited
at the River Art Group and in the 1990's a Special Exhibit of his
works were held at the
Panhandle Plains Museum.
Hoppe was an
accomplished artist sought out by collectors.
