Emma
Richardson Cherry
(1859-1954)
Important early artist in Houston, Texas. Cherry began her studies at the
Art Institute in Chicago and at the Art Students League in New York. Her instructors
included William Merritt Chase, Kenyon Cox, Hugh Henry Breckenridge, Walter Shirlaw and
others. She additionally studied at the Academies Julian in Paris, France.
Before moving to Houston, Texas in 1899, Cherry taught art at the University of Denver
& summer sessions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In Houston, she
painted in the realistic and modern styles. Mostly landscapes, still-lifes, portraits and
scenes of Houston.
Cherry was a driving force in the organization of the Houston Art
League and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. She also assisted the San Antonio Art
League in it's early development as well as organizing many early exhibits in Texas.
E. Richardson Cherry began exhibiting in 1891 at the Art Students League in Chicago. She
exhibited regularly! Some noted exhibits include the World's Colombian Exposition in
Chicago in 1893; Society of Independent Artists in New York; Salons of America, New York;
Texas Centennial Exposition 1936, Dallas, Texas; National Exposition of American Art,
Rockefeller Center, New York; Edgar B. Davis National Competition San Antonio, etc., etc.
Cherry was a member of the San Antonio Art League; Life member at the Art
Students League N.Y.; Houston Art League; North Shore Art Asso., Gloucester, MA; Southern
States Art League; Texas Fine Arts Asso. & others.
Cherry works are included in many public and private collections
and have been popular amoung collectors for decades.
