     James McCan was an Irish artist who became a resident in Victoria, Texas. He
was well known in ranching circles for his paintings and murals for the King and
Kleberg families at the King Ranch in South
Texas.
      McCan studied art at the National Art Training Schools in London, England. He
settled in San Antonio, Texas in the 1890’s and won a medal in an exhibit at the San
Antonio Art League in 1894. His art caught the attention of the King Ranch family and
he became artist in residence for 2 years painting on the ranch and in nearby Corpus
Christi. In 1897 McCan traveled to Victoria to paint a portrait commission for the
McFadden family and remained a resident for the next 27 years. In addition to his
paintings on the King Ranch & South Central Texas, he painted along the Coleto Creek,
the Guadalupe River, Medina River & Austin, Texas
